An active health and wellness guru, Ben enjoys researching, learning and sharing his insight with others. After trying CBD Oil and seeing how well it benefited him, he decided to begin a quest to share the insight with others.
According to the International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders approximately 25-45 million Americans and about 15% of the worldwide population suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS). IBS is generally defined as symptoms of abdominal discomfort, pain, changes to bowel movements etc.
The discomfort leaves many patients seeking remedies, treatment and solutions from the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Patients would often get frustrated from common treatments such as medications. Many of the side effects may exceed potential benefits.
Frustration can also occur when physicians are unable to find answers. Perhaps getting to the root of the cause of the symptoms can be problematic. Since brick and mortar medicine may be too quick to prescribe medications. Many medications come with undesirable side effects leaving patients looking for solutions.
Are there some more natural treatments and remedies for irritable bowel syndrome?
Some of the possibilities may surprise you!
Here are a few options to consider.
Improve Your Gut Health
Gut health is becoming more well known in recent years. Especially to those that are following wellness trends. However, there are still some that may not be fully aware of how important your gut health is to your overall health and wellness. Many people may not yet be knowledgeable of how poor gut health may lead to potential symptoms of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).
Your intestines contain millions of bacteria. Normally when the term bacteria comes up you may think of the bad bacteria that would cause illnesses. However, as it relates to bacteria there are the good guys and bad guys.
The bad guys being the types of bacteria that can cause illness and infections (we wash our hands and use important sanitary practices for this reason). There are other types of bacteria that absolutely essential in our body’s ability to function properly. These types of bacteria are called probiotics. You find the common types in yogurts. Supplements can contain extra boosts of probiotics.
Fermented foods naturally contain it. Also, drinks such as Kefir and Kombucha contain helpful strains of bacteria that can boost your gut health. The term gut health is becoming more common in health and wellness. This article from BMC Medicine defines some of the details and importance of gut health.
The good bacteria in your gut has a variety of different functions. They can help with immunity (also help keep bad bacteria controlled). Controlling the bad bacteria is important since it can avoid overgrowth from bad bacteria which can cause problems.
They can also assist with digestion. Maintaining proper balance can help improve your overall wellness and potentially improve some symptoms of IBS.
Adjust Diet To Food Sensitivities
To be clear, do not confuse food sensitivities to food allergies. Not quite the same. I wrote a previous post that included similar information related to natural remedies fibromyalgia. Each person has a slightly different body chemistry. There could be some foods that can lead to symptoms such as pain or inflammation. This is where the term food sensitivity is derived.
Simply by learning your body’s specific food sensitivities you can make diet adjustments and it can be an effective treatment option. The British Medical Journal released a case study detailing how food elimination may be an effective treatment for IBS treatments. You can learn about your individual food sensitivities by taking a food sensitivity test.
What Is a Food Sensitivity Test?
A food sensitivity test is an advanced test performed in a lab that tests your body’s response to a variety of different foods. If your body responds negatively then it could lead to different symptoms such as pain, bloating, headaches etc. The test is very advanced and can give a tremendous amount of details to help you modify your diet based upon your specific body chemistry.
There are more labs beginning to come into the market offering the test, however I have been familiar with the ALCAT specifically for a few years now. It is one that I have had family utilize successfully. A simple blood draw is performed and sent to a lab. They run tests on your blood and a detailed customized report is developed based upon your results.
Some people may be quick to rush to go gluten free. It is important to know that gluten free is legitimate for people who have a gluten intolerance and suffer from Celiac Disease for instance. This is not the case for everyone. These advanced lab tests can help provide you with the specific details to make the proper diet changes.
Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CED)
Could your symptoms be related to “Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CED)”? I am sure this is a new term to you. This is all related to your endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is a receptor system in your body that controls a variety of different body functions such as mood, sleep, immune response, inflammation to name a few.
If your endocannabinoid system (ECS) is out of balance it can cause a variety of symptoms which include insomnia, metabolism problems, pain (also including arthritis pain), anxiety, inflammation and more. A deficiency of your endocannabinoid system is what lead to the term Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CED). CED was first presented back in 2001 but more thoroughly explored in 2004.
In fact a recent peer reviewed publication states that current research supports the theory in which Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency possible cause of Treatment Resistant Syndromes Such As Migraines, Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Below is a link to the peer reviewed publication I am referencing.
- Some interesting notes in the publication based upon our topic here is that the greatest evidence for CED exists for fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and migraines.
- Some patients may suffer from only one of the syndromes but it is not uncommon to develop all 3 over a lifetime.
Much of my blog covers material related to CBD Oil and its potential benefits. The publication also stated that gastrointestinal (GI) propulsion, secretion and inflammation in the gut are modulated by the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This provided the rationale for cannabinoids as a treatment for IBS patients.
Interesting enough it stated how Cannabis was one of the first effective clinical interventions in the 19th century for intense secretory diarrhea now validated with modern methodology.
Does this now unveil some of the reasons how cannabinoids such as CBD can be helpful and beneficial? Perhaps a regiment with a high quality CBD can help regain proper balance with your endocannabinoid system to relieve symptoms of IBS?
If you are suffering from the symptoms of IBS then there are some natural treatments to be considered. Many which may help you to avoid unnecessary medications or those dreaded medication cocktails that can come with many unwanted side effects.
- Consider improving your gut health with probiotic rich foods or supplementing them.
- Advances in science have now allowed researchers to develop testing for food sensitivities. This will allow you to develop a food elimination plan based upon your specific body chemistry and manage symptoms.
- Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency could be the reason behind many difficult to treat syndromes such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Perhaps a regiment with a high quality CBD oil to help to regain proper balance and manage the symptoms.
More research will give more answers those questions specifically. Perhaps many of the remedies for many of the symptoms were hiding in plain sight all along. Potential natural solutions without unwanted medications with nasty side effects.
